Signal Processing
10.08.06 (11:09 pm)   [edit]
Signal processing deals with the analysis and manipulation of signals. Signals can be either analog, in which case the signal varies continuously according to the information, or digital, in which case the signal varies according to a series of discrete values representing the information. For analog signals, signal processing may involve the amplification and filtering of audio signals for audio equipment or the modulation and demodulation of signals for telecommunications. For digital signals, signal processing may involve the compression, error detection and error correction of digitally sampled signals Read more at http://www.electricalengineer...

Electrical Engineering
10.08.06 (11:00 pm)   [edit]
Electrical engineering (sometimes referred to as electrical and electronic engineering) is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. The field first became an identifiable occupation in the late nineteenth century with the commercialization of the electric telegraph and electrical power supply. The field now covers a range of sub-disciplines including those that deal with power, optoelectronics, digital electronics, analogue electronics, artificial intelligence, control systems, electronics, signal processing and telecommunications. 'Bulge' yields new planet class
10.08.06 (9:25 pm)   [edit]
Astronomers have discovered a new class of planets that take less than a day to whiz round their parent stars, the reports said. Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope revealed the existence of the planets, which orbit closer to their stars than any previously known. Dr Kailash Sahu and colleagues report finding the planets in a faint, crowded star field in a region of the Milky Way known as the galactic bulge. The team has published its findings in the scientific journal Nature. It uncovered the existence of 16 planets in the category of close orbiters, taking between 0.4 and 3.2 days to go around their respective stars. Many of the planets are the size of Jupiter, the largest planet in our Solar System. Two of the 16 have orbits of less than a day, creating a new category of "ultra-short" orbit exoplanets. In addition, these worlds generally orbit stars that are somewhat lighter than the typical stars where extrasolar planets have been found before. Dr Sahu, from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, US, and colleagues searched for the characteristic dips in a star's luminosity that occur as it is temporarily blocked by an orbiting planet. They carried out back-up, confirmation measurements using the "wobble" method, in which they looked for a telltale oscillation, or wobble, in the light coming from a star as it is tugged by the gravitational attraction of a planet. The researchers say that any planets that orbited at such a close distance to brighter, hotter stars would be destroyed by solar radiation. Astronomers have spotted 202 extra-solar planets since the first was spotted in October 1995. Resource: http://www.thenews.tblog.com

North Korea Conducts Nuclear Tests
10.08.06 (9:24 pm)   [edit]
SEOUL: North Korea on Monday conducted its first ever nuclear test, calling it a "historic event", official media said. The North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the test was carried out safely and successfully and there was no radiation leak. South Korea's defence ministry said the test was carried out at Hwadaeri near Kilju at 10:36 am (0136 GMT). The presidential office said the state intelligence agency detected a 3.58 magnitude seismic tremor in North Hamgyong Province in the northeast of the communist state. "We detected the explosive sound from Hwadaeri near Kilju in North Hamgyong Province at 10:36 am," a senior defense ministry official was quoted by news agency as saying. He said South Korea's military has yet to raise its alert level beyond usual defense situations. "The intelligence was immediately reported to President Roh Moo-hyun," Roh's spokesman Yoon Tae-young said. "Related countries are in consultation on the issue." "The field of scientific research in the DPRK (North Korea) successfully conducted an underground nuclear test under secure conditions on October 9..." KCNA said. "It has been confirmed that there was no such danger of radioactive emission in the course of the nuclear test as it was carried out under scientific consideration and careful calculation. "The nuclear test was conducted with indigenous wisdom and technology, 100 percent. "It marks a historic event as it greatly encouraged and pleased the KPA (North Korean army) and people that have wished to have powerful self-reliant defence capability. "It will contribute to defending the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the area around it." Read full article at http://www.thenews.tblog.com
